Editing

I do substantive and technical editing, including manuscript conceptualization, organization, developing theoretical significance, writing for audience, and journal or press selection. I also love technical copyediting projects for books, articles, and anything else that needs a good read-through.

My editing expertise has been honed through peer review for national and international research agencies, including the National Geographic Society, the U.S. National Science Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Swiss National Science Foundation, MacArthur Fellows Foundation, Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, and National Endowment for the Humanities. I also regularly review for top journals and academic presses in my field, including American Anthropologist, American Ethnologist, American Journal of Sociology, Current Anthropology, International Migration Review, Social Problems, Duke University Press, Oxford University Press, Stanford University Press, and University of California Press, among many others. As a faculty member at Loyola, I lead a Structured Writing Group for faculty focused on writing research articles. I have served as Associate Editor for the Journal of the Anthropology of North America (JANA) and as an Editorial Board Member for the journal Human Organization.

I will work with you to identify your writing and publishing goals and develop a pathway toward them. I will help you hone your writing voice to its clearest and most effective potential and develop arguments for the intellectual and social significance of your research results. I will also help you put your commas in their places.

Testimonials

What my colleagues and clients say:

Ruth is a stellar editor. She has a special talent for getting to the heart of your argument, pruning unnecessary text, and making your writing shine! She has a gift for knowing how to write for multiple audiences, whether academic or public. I would not hesitate to hire her—you won’t regret it!
